A housekeeper is employed on either a daily or residential basis. Generally a residential housekeeper will work around 12 hours per day, and a daily housekeeper will work between 4 and 10 hours per day, both with a short break during the day. A residential housekeeper would expect to be provided with her own bedroom and bathroom, although some may even anticipate their own self-contained accommodation.
As a guide, a daily housekeeper will command a salary of £12 to £13 net per hour and a residential housekeeper’s salary will start at around £500 net per week and upwards.


A chauffeur’s working hours can vary considerably due to the nature of the position, and can sometimes finish quiet late at night if their employer has a busy evening schedule. The post does not normally provide accommodation, and salaries are agreed on either an hourly or weekly rate which will vary considerably depending on the hours required. The hourly rate is in the region of £17 + per hour. In addition, an overtime rate is also agreed after a certain number of hours worked per week. A uniform is provided if required.

Companion / Carer

A carer / companion can work can work on a live-in or live out basis. When working on a live-in basis, they would expect to be provided with their own bedroom in the house. Companion/carers expect to earn a salary starting around £90 + net per day depending on experience and job description. They work approximately 10 – 12 hours during the day and can be on call overnight if required.

Chef / Cook

Chef / cook’s hours vary according to the  client’s requirements and their salaries will also vary depending on age, experience, duties and working hours required, and also whether accommodation is provided. Salaries will start at around £500 net per week for a cook and can rise to over £1000 net per week for a qualified chef with extensive experience, particularly in high end restaurants and high profile households.


The salary for gardeners starts around £21,000 per annum and can rise to £36,000 gross per annum, depending on age, experience and qualifications. Gardeners normally work Monday through Friday but over the busy summer months will often work at weekends. Part time daily gardener salaries vary between £15 and £18 net per hour.

Estate Manager

Estate managers are normally provided with their own self-contained accommodation in the grounds and expect to have their utility bills included in their salary package. Their salary will vary greatly depending on their experience and the type of role offered.

Domestic Couple

Couples generally live on the property and are provided with their own separate accommodation with all their utility costs included in their salary package. Some couples have their own furniture.

The salary range will vary considerably depending on the combination of skills, the location of the role and their experience. As a guide, salaries will start at £900 net per week and can rise to £2000 per week for an executive role in London or abroad.

Personal Assistant

Personal Assistants usually come into the household on a daily basis and are  employed on either a full-time or part-time basis. Their salary expectations are £15-£20 gross per hour, and they would expect their meals to be supplied while on duty.
